Poor planning and execution can lead to lack of meaningful employment, no access to healthcare, substance abuse, divorce, homelessness and possibly suicide, as evidenced by statistics from the Department of Veteran’s affairs and Housing and Urban Development. With greater commitment to service and a higher optempo, health often gets sidelined and the quality of the opportunity to transition properly can be lost. It’s not surprising when service members separate from service to find they have no injuries or illnesses documented in their medical record, errors on their DD-214, no health or life insurance and no employment opportunities. These shortcoming can create several problems when separating from service. Many veterans fall victim to a feedback loop with the VA that can extend years into the veteran lifecycle and lose their purpose. The barriers associated with transitioning from service are widely unknown and relying on DoD mandated classes or your admin department can be uniquely stressful, and underwhelming. Relying on mandatory programs or inexperienced clerks is not your only option. The quality of the opportunity to transition properly is variable due to operational commitments; some return from deployments with only 3 months to prepare for transition, while some go TAD for months at a time for transition assistance. Our view is that the transition planning process should be met with equal parts excitement and aggression and everyone should have a robust support network.
