Zinfandel generates an enthusiasm and magic that captures our American pioneering spirit in a bottle. This distinct varietal engages our imagination and attention like no other, uniting winegrowers, winemakers and wine enthusiasts in the pursuit of the preservation and recognition of Zinfandel as America’s grape. Through the Association of Zinfandel Advocates and Producers (ZAP), Zinfandel enthusiasts study and celebrate the Zinfandel grape, connect with one another, and educate the public about Zinfandel’s place in America’s history and culture. A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, ZAP was founded in 1991 at a time when Zinfandel was the underdog with a cause. A small group of passionate winemaking pioneers and Zinfandel lovers joined to create a movement that would elevate the understanding and status of Zinfandel wine – rightfully establishing it among the premier varietals of the world. Today, ZAP comprises hundreds of producer members and thousands of advocates, and Zinfandel is now recognized and respected internationally as a world-class red wine that tells an inspiring American story. Its historic association with the Wild West, the Gold Rush, and rugged individualists taming unexplored territory, reminds us of a nation coming of age despite the odds. ZAP members revel in Zinfandel’s mysterious history and its evolving story fuels the embers of discovery, entrepreneurship and agriculture that are truly American. ZAP is one of the only organizations that has established and provided funding for education and research to study the history, genetics and propagation of a wine varietal to ensure its future. Just as Zinfandel differentiates itself with approachable yet unmistakable flavors that provide a discerning sensation for the palate, ZAP and its members create a dynamic community in pursuit of a bright and distinctive future for America’s grape.
