About Amphibian Ark
At Amphibian Ark we are rescuing amphibians in crisis, focusing on those that cannot currently be safeguarded in nature. We work with partners across the globe to rescue amphibian species at risk of going extinct. We do this by: - Conducting Conservation Needs Assessments (our signature methodology developed with the IUCN SSC CPSG) - Establishing species rescue programs locally—within the species' native habitat range—and providing capacity-building support where needed. - Providing grants that support amphibian ex situ conservation measures, research, and capacity building. By buying time for these most at-risk species, we ensure that, when their habitats are safe again, there will still be animals ready to return to the wild. ___ Amphibians are an important component of the global ecosystem, as indicators of environmental health and contributors to human health. Addressing the current amphibian extinction crisis represents the greatest species conservation challenge in the history of humanity. In response to this growing crisis, Amphibian Ark was established by the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) in 2006. The global conservation community has formulated a response in the Amphibian Conservation Action Plan, and an integral part of that response is the Amphibian Ark (AArk), in which select species that would otherwise go extinct will be maintained in captivity until the threats they face can be mitigated, and they can be secured in the wild.
