Although the street name 'Donkersteeg' translates to ‘dark alley’, we promise you it’s a great gathering spot for you and your friends. ANDÉMO BÉVER UN'OMBRA When Venetians invite each other to go out for a drink, they use the common phrase “andémo béver un'ombra". This means as much as “let’s go drink a shadow", in which the shadow refers to a small glass of wine. It is a souvenir from the time when wine was sold in shaded stands at Piazza San Marco. The wine stands moved with the sun, in order to stay in the shadow at all times. A good glass of wine is usually accompanied by ‘cicchetti’ and/or antipasti.
