About Brooklyn Heights Association
Brooklyn Heights is one of the gems of New York City, and credit for that belongs in large part to the Brooklyn Heights Association. The BHA is the organized voice of the Heights and a leader among neighborhood associations advocating for both innovation and preservation. Whether you rent a studio, own a brownstone, live in a high-rise, or work in the area, we fight for everyone’s stake in this neighborhood. A HISTORY OF ACTIVISM, A FOCUS ON THE FUTURE Since our founding in 1910, our focus on local changes have had broad impact. For example, we successfully lobbied for the Heights to become the first Historic District in the city; we also prevented Robert Moses from bulldozing the neighborhood. Instead, the Brooklyn Queens Expressway (aka the BQE) runs under the neighborhood, covered by the magnificent Promenade with its world famous view of the Statue of Liberty, the Manhattan skyline and the Brooklyn Bridge. Now we seek forward-looking, sustainable alternatives for the reconstruction of the BQE; we organize community-building events (Longest Table, Halloween Parade, Walking Tours, etc); we advocate for more and better public spaces, schools, and libraries; we support local businesses and the revitalization of Montague St. The secret to our success is our strong and engaged membership base.
