About Chicago Electrical Trauma Rehabilitation Institute
The Chicago Electrical Trauma Rehabilitation Institute (CETRI) is an academic clinical program focused on helping survivors of electrical shock (including lightning injuries) optimize recovery. Some individuals have trouble regaining full balance and coordination and/or may manifest neuropsychological disorders. The CETRI multidisciplinary team was established in early 1990’s for this purpose and have been working in collaboration and publishing its findings in scientific journals and books since. CETRI collaborates with several similar teams in other nations that have formed over the past two decades. Electrical shocks can cause injury in multiple ways including direct electrical force (ie. electroporation) and thermal burn pathways. The CETRI team was the first to point out the complex multiphysical pathways involved. CETRI has a broad multidisciplinary team of experts including expert physicians with engineering backgrounds. Most patients travel from outside of the Illinois area. So, CETRI connects with primary care providers to manage follow up care. CETRI is also involved in research to develop new drug therapies to help cells recover from electrical shock injury.
