About Corellian
Problem The problem is today’s inefficient cooling technology causes global warming. By 2100 air conditioning alone could cause 0.5 °C of warming. And the hotter it gets the more cooling we’ll need. From 2020 to 2050, air conditioning demand in humid emerging markets like India and Indonesia will grow 500% and the global market size will triple. Air conditioning hasn't changed much in 100 years. It uses climate-harming refrigerants and wastes electricity, particularly in hot-humid areas where alternatives like evaporative cooling don’t work. In cities like Dubai cooling already consumes over 60% of all electricity. To handle this cooling load, energy utilities still invest heavily in power capacity from the burning of fossil fuels, even though electricity from solar is cheaper. Why? Late afternoon peak demand from cooling does not coincide with electricity from solar. And battery storage at this scale is too costly. Better renewable energy storage for cooling would go a long way to breaking the world's addiction to fossil fuels. Furthermore, most air conditioners re-circulate air that is too cold, too dry and thus promote the airborne spread of pathogens. Systems that provide fresh air require even more electricity to cool and dehumidify the hot outdoor air. And it’s not only our homes and offices: without a breakthrough in efficiency, key industries which rely on cooling - such as food and beverages, data centres and transport - will struggle to be truly zero carbon. Solution AirSolaris COOL is a solar-driven ventilation air conditioning system +10X greener than today’s cooling products, with 80% lower lifetime cost. The cost-effective design will use ~5X less electricity, harvest and store solar energy, disinfect air, and avoid the use of climate-harming refrigerants. AirSolaris COOL has been validated by leading European energy research institutes and a prototype system is in development.
