Mike and I opened DESIGN UPHOLSTERY in 1984 as a furniture re-upholstery company. Mike's grandfather, Rufus Stanfield, trained him in the old methods of doing business . . . quality and integrity. In 2006, we changed our name to DESIGN SERVICES OF CHARLOTTE, INC., to reflect the larger scope of what our business entails. No longer are we only a re-upholstery company, we also fabricate (build) custom furniture. We offer designers the opportunity to design-your-own furniture with your own private label. We offer everyone the freedom to design for size-specific areas. See something you like in a magazine, but need a modification? We can do it for you! We use all hardwood, double doweling and individually 8-way hand tied springs. Everything, down to the UV protected thread we use, is first quality. Furniture fabricated overseas is very often made with inferior products such as plywood (or "engineered wood" as it is now referred to), pine and cardboard. Though, in many cases, the fabric looks nice, what lies beneath is sad. Much of this furniture will end up in landfills as it cannot take the stress of reupholstering.
