GiraCatavento is now taking its first steps towards becoming a nonprofit association that aims at the creation of an after-school activities’ network in East-Timor. For what and why? Our founder (Adriana Mamede) volunteered for two months at the Missão das Irmãs Reparadoras de Nsa de Fátima, in Memo, Maliana. Once there, her greatest challenge was the communication. To communicate without a translator was near impossible. Although the Portuguese language is the second official language of East-Timor, it is not spoken. The Portuguese language was chosen to teach at schools but neither the teachers understand the language (written or spoken). Obviously, this generates indifference towards school, isolation, and ignorance. What Adriana saw were kids and young adults with no creativity, curiosity nor critical thinking. She saw people that comply without questioning. Our goal is to provide answers to these challenges of East-Timor’s people, filling some of the gaps of the educational system of the country, through encouraging to read, stimulating curiosity, imagination, critical and strategic thinking and a permanent contact with the Portuguese language. In an early stage, GiraCatavento will be implemented in community centres of missions already based in East-Timor. The step that follows is the construction of after-school activities’ centres in the most remote regions, that do not have access to schools nor missionary centres. And, in the long run, existing a positive growth of the project, we want to expand our activities to other countries of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries.
