About Kirkaldy's Testing Works

Kirkaldy's Testing Works is a unique piece of London's industrial and engineering heritage - the world's first independent commercial materials testing house - in the heart of the Bankside community. It opened here at 99 Southwark Street London on 1 January 1874 with David Kirkaldy's manifesto "Facts Not Opinions" carved above the door and his vast 15m Universal Testing Machine inside setting international standards in the testing of industrial and engineering materials. Today Kirkaldy’s Testing Works has a new lease of life. We are a volunteer-run charity (registered charity Number 297557) with a mission to celebrate, share and safeguard the Kirkaldy’s Testing & Experimenting Works and a vision to capture imaginations, inspire curious minds and bring new audiences to science, engineering and design. Our hands-on STEM workshop is a unique chance for A Level physics students to understand the principles of materials; we open regularly to groups and individual visitors demonstrating the working historic machines in our care, and we offer a unique central London venue for events, arts projects and filming.
