About Lydia Smith Sickle Cell Foundation
The Lydia Smith Sickle Cell Foundation (LSSCF), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that helps to provide direct care access to patients with sickle cell disease. The foundation by providing direct care needs to patients has helped hundreds of families nationwide who suffer from sickle cell. LSSCF’s mission is to make sure families have access to needed education and quality of life services that extend and enhance the lives of their loved ones suffering with this disease. The mission has extended to providing college and healthcare career opportunities to kids with sickle cell through our partners at the University of Illinois School of Medicine. The foundation will continue to provide education curriculum and training to emergency room healthcare professionals to help recognize and efficiently treat sickle cell patients in in the ER. In 2011, former NFL Linebacker, Robert L. Mackey founded The Lydia W. Smith Foundation, known as Lydia Smith Sickle Cell Foundation, in honor of his mother who has been surviving with sickle cell for over 20 years after being given a life expectancy of 7 years with a late diagnosis in 1994. After witnessing firsthand the effects of the disease, physically and financially, Robert knew he had to do something. "My mom, Lydia Smith, and my aunt both suffer from sickle cell. Seeing their pain has changed my life and given me a purpose – to do my best to alleviate the suffering of others with sickle cell.” - Robert For More Info: www.sicklecellfund.org
