The MACAM - Museu de Arte Contemporânea Armando Martins, scheduled to open at the end of 2024, is a private cultural initiative dedicated to modern and contemporary art with a twist: it will also include within its walls a 5-star hotel, the first of its kind in Portugal and Europe. It will open in the Palácio Condes da Ribeira Grande on Rua da Junqueira, a building of great historical and cultural importance dating back to the early 18th century. The MACAM complex, designed by the Metrourbe architecture studio, includes the palace and a new extension to the rear, with a total of 13,000 square metres of public space. This privileged location, between Alcântara and Belém, will be a new meeting point for art and culture lovers, and tourists visiting the city of Lisbon. With the strong belief that access to art is important, and that it should not be deprived of contact with the public, founder and entrepreneur Armando Martins decided to open his collection to the world, and also to invite other private collectors to join him - thus justifying the project's motto: The House of Private Collections. MACAM will then be a house open to all, a unique place to meet and share meaningful experiences around the arts.Under the direction of Adelaide Ginga, the museum will present the extensive collection of modern and contemporary art that founder and entrepreneur Armando Martins started in 1974 and continues to develop. In addition, the museum will also unveil other private art collections from around the world, unknown to the public. The MACAM complex will also offer a series of other spaces with diverse programming, including a garden, a cafeteria, a restaurant, a shop, an auditorium, and a de-sacralised chapel with a cultural programme dedicated to the performing arts and literature.
