About Peace Village
About Us Mission Peace Village creates educational settings in which individuals can discover their potential for personal peace and peacemaking. We promote the practice of nonviolence, the value of seeing ourselves in one another, and the importance of being a peaceful presence. We emphasize multi-cultural appreciation and the message of peace in each of the world’s religious traditions. Our goal is an ever widening village in which mutual respect prevails, and conflicts are resolved through patient negotiation. Brief History Peace Village began in 1996, as an experiment in peace education for children. The first Village was a summer day-camp, ages 6 to 13, in Lincoln City, Oregon. It was prompted by an episode of violence in a local high school and inspired by the message of peace inherent in each the world’s religious traditions and by Gandhi’s prescription, “If we are to create real peace in this world, it will have to being with the children.” Our goal was to create a Village of racial, cultural and religious diversity in which children learn to deal with conflict by accessing the reservoir of peace within themselves, employing empathy, and practicing the techniques of nonviolent conflict resolution. Today, there are nine Peace Village summer day-camps in five states, and our experiment has grown to include after school programs for elementary students (Peace Club) and teens (Peace Out), a PV Charter High School in Eugene, Oregon, and an Adult Workshop Program.
