About Phila Sonke Wellness Initiative

Phila Sonke funds affordable and innovative private healthcare providers who want to improve the lives and dignity of purpose-driven people with disabilities in low-income communities who do not have medical aid, in order to see them return to being able and healthy, active members of their communities in all the roles that they may fill. The vision is that all disabled people in South Africa are able to access the healthcare and wellness support they need to live their best and most productive lives with dignity. Our beneficiaries have suffered strokes, traumatic brain injuries or other events which have caused a physical, cognitive or communication disability which has a drastic impact on their functional prognosis. Our beneficiaries’ lives change significantly, reducing their ability to engage in their roles such as being a breadwinner, mother, community member etc. Each of the Phila Sonke beneficiaries start a “bounce back journey” which includes focused healthcare services aimed at addressing their specific goals, such as Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Psychology and Social Work services. Phila Sonke also provides fund to address the structural injustices that may affect the beneficiaries’ ability to achieve their goals, such as transport costs or equipment to adapt their environment at home. Through providing this care, Phila Sonke is able to assist it’s beneficiaries to return to their roles in employment, as contributing family members and active community members.
