A traditional “wet paint” method of coating metal and other materials uses solvents (which aren’t exactly environmentally friendly) to allow the paint to be in liquid form when applied. The solvent makes the solids in the paint sticky and it adheres to the surface. The process of Powder Coating uses only the solids (as atomized powder) to be sprayed, which adheres to the surface by electrostatic charge passing through the powder while being sprayed. The over-spray from powder coating is collected and reused – compared to wet spraying which even with a skilled operative can waste up to 50% – which makes Powder Coating a far more cost effective process. We then heat the component covered in the powder in an oven, fusing the powder with the metal.
