About Professional Landmen's Association of New Orleans
In 1963 and throughout the early 60's, the Roosevelt Hotel, the New Orleans Petroleum Club and Kolb's Restaurant were popular sites for monthly lunch meetings of the general membership. Usually, there was a speaker, and The Times-Picayune was contacted to photograph and report on these events, which were to be included on the Oil Page of the Sunday Edition. Speakers during 1963 included The Honorable Walter B. Hamlin, Louisiana Supreme Court Associate Justice, Austin Lewis, of the firm Liskow and Lewis, as well as Dave Dixon, who spoke on efforts to bring professional football teams to the Deep South. Executive Night in 1971 was held at the Royal Orleans Hotel, where partygoers enjoyed Rib Room prime rib dinners. The speaker's topic was the current gas shortage. The cost for the cocktail party and dinner was $15.00. In the fall of 1973, PLANO welcomed its first female landman, Ms. Donna Gustafson of Chevron, who was jokingly referred to in the PLANO newsletter as a "landlady." PLANO joined other local associations in 1979 in welcoming the compilation by the AAPL of CPL requirements and guidelines. By 1983, the AAPL had developed a program to prepare participants for taking the CPL exam. The program covered such topics as land descriptions, real estate, property and title curative, contract law, leasing, lease administration, well tracts, operating agreements, pooling and unitization and ethics. The PLANO "$1,000 Endowment Fund" was created in 1990 to benefit PLANO's Community Relations Program. Under the program, donations up to $1,000 were solicited from industry and matched dollar for dollar by PLANO. Today, building on the foundation of the past, PLANO looks to the future and continues to fulfill its mission is to promote and advance the the art and science of Professional Landmen through the development and education opportunities in the land and energy industry, from subsurface rights for hydrocarbons to the development of acreage for wind and solar energy.
