About Quantum Network Design

Quantum Network Design GmbH is a newly founded start-up by Wolfgang Dür and Alexander Pirker together with the University of Innsbruck with the goal to develop software for simulating (and classically operating) quantum networks, one of the most emerging fields of quantum physics. Wolfgang Dür is considered one of the founders of the research field of quantum communication due to his seminal work on quantum repeaters. Alexander Pirker, who did his PhD degree under Wolfgang, was exploring quantum networks from an engineering perspective, developing and proposing a quantum network stack. The founders, both still actively engaging in research of the field of quantum networks in one of the world-leading research groups at the University of Innsbruck, aim at using all their knowledge and expertise to build a simulator for quantum networks for commercial use. The software we develop will help manufacturers of quantum computing devices, but also network companies and telecommunication providers, to simulate their planned quantum network and gain insights into their performance characteristics, like for example reachable fidelities, rates, etc, resulting in a verdict regarding the feasibility of the quantum network. The simulator also determines potential optimizations of the network, like e.g. nodes require less storage or other topologies. Importantly, the software works in such a way that will be also able to operate the classical control plane of a real quantum network.
