Rivers & Roots is at the forefront of transformative initiatives in Nepal, driving impactful change across three pillars: Waste Reduction, Education, and River Restoration. Waste Reduction from Landfills: In strategic partnerships with influential restaurants, we actively collect recyclable materials, diverting them from overwhelmed landfills. Our focus extends to reducing and repurposing organic waste, specifically targeting its significant contribution to landfill burdens. By addressing organic waste, we aim to alleviate strain on landfills and usher in a sustainable waste management paradigm. Education: Partnering with five schools, we conduct comprehensive environmental seminars for students from grades 6 to 10. These seminars delve into the severe implications of water, land, and air pollution in the Kathmandu Valley. Our innovative program encourages active student participation in recycling, earning points for bringing back recyclable materials, which are then redeemed for essential school supplies. Additionally, our Plastic Brick Initiative pioneers the creation of bricks from plastic waste, contributing to both waste reduction and infrastructure development. River Restoration: We envision a cleaner future for Kathmandu's rivers. Our waste-blocking barriers, set to be deployed in rivers and canals, aim to arrest waste flow downstream effectively. Utilizing data-driven waste management, we systematically collect and control riverine waste, with a focus on identifying key companies for the potential adoption of sustainable packaging practices. Currently seeking suitable locations for prototype testing, we are committed to rejuvenating river ecosystems through extensive tree planting and ground coverage, combating soil erosion, and restoring the natural balance along riverbanks.
