Safeena Muslim Cancer Support Network (SMCSN) is the first ever national Muslim Cancer Support Network in the UK to provide services specifically for Muslims affected by cancer. SMCSN is a free service as we recognise that cancer is indiscriminate, affecting people regardless of background, race, or age. We have seen that despite the high prevalence of cancer, there is no targeted support for Muslims, which can address their specific cultural and religious needs when impacted by cancer. SMCSN provides practical, educational, emotional support, and in particular, Islamic guidance for Muslims affected by cancer. We are focused on the following three main areas: 1. Providing a befriending service to people affected by cancer to help them cope with their diagnosis and treatment. The peer support service is not just limited to people diagnosed with cancer but is also available to others such as family and friends of the person diagnosed with cancer. 2. Improving knowledge and awareness of cancer amongst Muslim communities and in doing so raising awareness of symptoms and the importance of early detection and diagnosis. This includes signposting to other organisations and resources where necessary. This work is done through community cancer champions. 3. Providing specific cultural and faith based services, advice and guidance for the spiritual, physical and mental well-being for people affected by cancer.
