SMWV aims to make science and technology accessible to all people by being an outstanding regional institution that ignites and nurtures life-long learning. Science and technology affect every aspect of our lives. Although scientific literacy is critical, interest in science continues to decline in the United States, especially among underserved populations. Exposure to math and science opportunities at an early age is a key ingredient to career interests, confidence and growth. The National Research Council proclaims that “the fundamental influence of early childhood experiences is increasingly recognized as providing the foundation for discipline-specific learning. Museum experiences can ignite increased interest in science and STEM-based career choices. Our responsibility is to put the mechanisms in place that will encourage an interest in science, both to promote scientific literacy among the general population and to encourage consideration of STEM-based careers.
