About Science Riot

Science Riot is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that helps scientists and institutions engage with new audiences through innovative programming and workshops. Our founding purpose was to give scientists a microphone. But after working with dozens of science outreach programs we realize that simply providing science professionals a soapbox wasn’t enough. A majority of scientists have no public communication training and are apprehensive about engaging with the adult public as a result, which is why we developed a workshop series that teaches them the impossible - stand-up comedy! After our crash-course workshop in comedy writing and performance, scientists develop a short comedy talks about their favorite scientific topic that they will then deliver to a public audience. The result is a brainy and entertaining event that attracts a diverse audience from outside of the science bubble. Our science communication syllabus was developed with assistance from University College London, professional comedians, and feedback from hundreds of science professionals. We first focus on how to make their expertise relatable and interesting, then find the humor in their topic without undermining the seriousness of their profession. Since 2016 we have worked with many industry, university, and public institutions the Denver Museum for Nature and Science, the Space Foundation, the Field Museum, and March for Science. Our participants gained the confidence to perform live for audiences of 200+ attendees and share their passion. Afterward they often look like they had just been skydiving, but it can be an empowering and life altering experience. Whether you work in academia or a STEM career, you are an expert.
