About Sierra Kids Foundation
The Sierra Kids Foundation is a non-profit foundation formed to benefit the Early Childhood Autism Program at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). As seen in recent local and national television specials, autism is a developmental disability that affects, often severely, a person’s ability to communicate and socially interact with others. Currently, autism is believed to affect 1 out of every 150 newborns. The UNR Early Childhood Autism Program specializes in early intensive treatment for young children with autism. The program offers a comprehensive, individualized treatment program that emphasizes the child's development in the areas of language, communication, socialization, and personal behavior. With its connection to UNR, the program is also a training site for university students involved in the science and practice of treating these children. Currently, it takes $2,000 or more a month to treat a child on a full-time basis in the UNR Early Childhood Autism Program. This amounts to roughly $25,000 a year needed by a family to put their child through this program. In 2008 the Sierra Kids Foundation was able to award $35,000 in scholarships to three kids, which was made possible by foundations such as The E.L Cord Foundation and local businesses/individuals. We are asking you/your firm to be a tournament sponsor or to donate to our raffle. Through your sponsorship or donation you will be helping a family provide their child with the needed treatment to help them recover from autism. It is truly a remarkable program, and we are hoping through this tournament we can offer scholarship funds so that more children will have the opportunity to participate in, and benefit from the UNR Early Childhood Autism Program.
