About State Agency for Railway Safety
Railway safety is present in every component of the railway system—from the lines and the trains running on them, to the personnel, regulations, and procedures governing their operation. All actors within the system, from those most directly involved—such as infrastructure managers and railway companies—to those providing supporting services—such as maintenance entities, centers, or manufacturers—contribute to achieving safety, each within their area of responsibility. The State Agency for Railway Safety is one more element within this system, acting as the authority responsible for railway safety, as established by Directive (EU) 2016/798 of 11 May 2016 on railway safety, applicable to the General Interest Railway Network. To fulfill these responsibilities, the Agency is structured as a public body in accordance with the provisions of Law 40/2015, of 1 October, on the Legal Regime of the Public Sector. Its Statute was approved by Royal Decree 1072/2014, of 19 December, which established the official start of its operations on 1 April 2015.
