As the Accidental Locavore, I share my insights, tips and food adventures with you. What’s a locavore? A locavore is someone who eats food that has been grown within 100 miles of where they live. Why do you consider yourself an accidental locavore? Because last summer I accidentaIly stumbled into a wonderful world of freshly grown produce, from the farmers down the road. Before I knew it we were eating locally, and it was great! Knowing how to navigate greenmarkets, local farmstands, and your supermarket and choosing the best they have to offer is not something that comes naturally to many. What’s the Accidental Locavore about? The Accidental Locavore is a blog, a website, and soon, a television show. I give you a whole host of insider tips, including that the freshest and healthiest food you can eat is right outside your doorstep. You will learn how to select the best produce no matter where you live and I’ll show you how to prepare it with simple recipes that anyone can do. Don’t you live in the middle of New York City now? How is that local? I lead a double life, weekdays living in NYC and weekends in the middle of Dutchess County, about an hour and a half north of the city. In the city, we’re surrounded by some of the best (and worst) food the world has to offer. In the country we’ve got people like my farmer who grows some of the most beautiful produce, reviving heritage varieties, and promoting sustainable farming. Isn’t this all very complicated and time consuming? I will show you how a working woman can cook for her family and friends using the best that nature has to offer in a simple and straightforward way. We’ll also show you how to maneuver through the market, picking the best tomatoes, melons, squash and corn among others, no matter whether your market is a big box store, a farm stand, or a local greenmarket.
