About The Pocket Testament League (UK Charity)
Enabling Christians to share their faith one-to-one by the provision of Gospel booklets, training and support. PTL began as the vision of a teenage girl named Helen Cadbury (of the chocolate company fame) in 1893, in Birmingham. Helen always brought a pocket-sized New Testament with her to school and her friends were curious about the book she was reading. Helen simply shared her faith with them and started a movement. Helen organised a group of girls who sewed pockets onto their dresses to carry the small New Testaments that her father provided. The girls named their group “The Pocket Testament League,” pledging to read a portion of the Bible every day, to pray and to share their faith as God provided opportunities. The worldwide spread started when Helen met and married the American evangelist, Charles Alexander, in 1904. Charles caught Helen’s vision and his experience in evangelism was instrumental to the work of encouraging Christians to read, carry and share God’s word. The Pocket Testament League rapidly grew around the world to become an organisation of over 8,000,000 members who pledged to read the Bible daily, to dedicate a pocket to the Lord, to carry pocket-sized Scripture with them everywhere they go, and to pray for opportunities to share the Word of God. PTL was described as the ‘greatest movement of God since the 14th century” by The Sunday School Times in 1920. Please see our website (https://www.ptluk.org) for further history. Although some years ago there was diversification from the original vision of Helen Cadbury, in recent times there has been a strong pull back to that original vision of the founder. The organisation is focussed, passionate and membership is growing strongly again, with millions of Gospels being distributed through our members. We are a registered UK charity, no. 281910.
