I spent my 20s believing if I just worked harder, happiness would come. If I just did more, I’d arrive to some degree of calm in my body. If I just figured it out, I’d be rewarded with appreciation, and that would carry me long enough to “make it.” It didn’t work. Efforting at 200% and keeping myself in a high functioning state only reinforced itself, the pattern intensifying and deepening over time. Because sprinkled in between all that effort were micro rewards; small bits of praise, a bonus, another company recruiting me…All these small victories were enough to sustain me, until they weren’t. I walked this path as long as I could, going into jobs that were deeply misaligned with my personal values, and working at companies that modeled one version of success: work harder. In 2016, I knew it wasn’t sustainable any longer, I knew I was nearing my rock bottom. But somehow, some way, I lasted a whole year longer.
