To Grow An Orchid identifies schools and institutes in rural Cambodia where there is a lack of experience of Information Technology and provides technical experience and project management to accelerate IT projects. It also funds students from poorer backgrounds to enable them to complete their education. In Cambodia there is a lack of skilled people in IT. Following the purge of professional people in the late '70's the uptake of skilled professions has been slow. Most of the money is concentrated in the cities of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, rural Cambodia misses out. In rural areas the average wage is $150 per month. It is difficult for students. Many live at the school in dormitories so they can get an education. We have seen schools and institutes (teaching students from 15-22) where there is very little IT. IT training is little more than Excel and Word. The country will not grow with such little skill. To Grow An Orchid aims to help schools and students. We provide guidance on IT. From identifying in-use technology, recommending improvements to providing website hosting for learning and helping identify and implement school management systems. All of these bring more IT into use in the school. The more there is, the more both teachers and students can learn. We provide some funds to upgrade equipment, pay the initial licenses on software until they can see the benefit. It is a long and worthwhile process
