About UMCASI
Established in 2010, UMCASI is a non-profit engineering organization consisting of students in all stages of their degrees. One of the benefits students receive by being UMCASI members is the opportunity to compete in the national CASI Free Flight Glider Competition, held each May in Gananoque, Ontario. In order to compete, university teams are required to fully design, construct, and fly an original, unpowered aircraft (or glider) that must fit within a 2x2x1m box and weigh less than 1.2kg. Once launched, the glider may not be actively controlled in any way during its flight save for a team-designed dethermalizer device used to safely bring the glider down on command. The gliders are manually launched using a tow rope and each flight is adjudicated based on a weighted combination of payload and flight time. This year, we continue to improve our high-performance glider design and innovate with new materials, manufacturing methods, and state-of-the-art performance analysis. These include computational fluid dynamics software, advanced composite materials, and laser cutter technology. Recent Accomplishments: 2013 CASI Free Flight Competition: - First place finish overall - Top three highest scoring flights - Only team to fly in the first testing session - Best oral presentation 2012 CASI Free Flight Competition: - Second place finish overall - Top two highest scoring flights - Best oral presentation - Most flights - Only glider to survive competition
