About University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex

On 21st March 2016, the Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, and by the enactment of the Teaching Hospital Complex Administration Act of 2016, established the University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex (USLTHC), with three mandates: Research, Training, and Service. Unlike the teaching hospital model in many other countries, the Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex is unique, in that it is a complex with six (6) major hospitals in different locations. These six (6) hospitals with 1,277-bed spaces are Connaught Hospital, Princess Christian Maternity Hospital, Ola During Children’s Hospital, Kissy Psychiatric Hospital, Jui Hospital (also known as the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital), and Lakka Infectious Diseases Hospital, spread across the Western Are. In addition, there are five (5) affiliated hospitals, including the regional government hospitals in Makeni, Bo, Kenema, Choithram Memorial Hospital at Hill Station in Freetown, and Emergency Trauma Hospital at Goderich in Freetown. The hospitals under the Administration of the Teaching Hospitals Complex are the main sites for training health professionals across all cadres and at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. Mission Statement: To enhance quality healthcare delivery in Sierra Leone by providing holistic care to every patient through integrated clinical practice, training, and research. Vision: To provide the best quality health care services in Sierra Leone. Core Values: Professionalism; Commitment; Teamwork; Integrity.
