Formerly known as the North Carolina Tennis Association (NCTA), USTA North Carolina was founded in 1973 and since that time has focused on its singular mission: to promote and develop the game of tennis in North Carolina. USTA NC administers a variety of programs statewide for players of all ages and ability levels. As a not-for-profit organization, the association invests 100% of its proceeds to promote and develop the growth of tennis in North Carolina. There are currently over 34,000 USTA members residing in North Carolina. A professional staff housed in Greensboro carries out the USTA NC's daily operations, but policy is formed and some of the organization's work is executed via a board of directors and committee structure of volunteers.
