About Vancouver Youth Choir
Founded in 2013 by Artistic Director Carrie Tennant, the Vancouver Youth Choir (VYC) has grown to become Canada's largest youth choir. At VYC, we believe in the transformative power of music and the immense potential within every child. Our approach is rooted in two core beliefs: children and youth are capable of great artistry, and they need community and connection in their lives. With nearly 600 singers across 12 ensembles in 7 levels, VYC welcomes anyone who loves to sing from ages 5-24. Through community and donor support, we make choral education accessible to all, offering subsidized tuition to ALL VYC members and additional financial aid to one in four singers. In a world that is increasingly challenging for young people, VYC strives to develop artistry at a very high level, while building leadership and confidence in a safe and supportive community. In a little over a decade, VYC has emerged as one of Canada's most dynamic youth arts organizations, earning international recognition for its adventurous programming and innovative performances. The choir represented Canada at the IFCM World Symposium on Choral Music in Istanbul and performed at Carnegie Hall in 2023. We have received first place in the National Choral Competition, been featured on CBC Radio, and are one of four Western Canadian choirs invited to perform at the American Choral Directors Association Conference. From our youngest members learning to listen and find joy in creation, to advanced singers working towards professional-level performances, our structured pathway allows progression at individual paces. VYC's commitment to expanding access to choral music education and fostering cultural understanding is reflected in our dedication to truth and reconciliation, inclusivity, and developing the next generation of musicians.
