About Friendship House Association of American Indians
Founded in 1963, Friendship House is one of the first and longest-standing organizations dedicated to supporting American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities. We have a clear mission: to provide culturally centered support and healing for AI/AN individuals and families facing substance use and mental health challenges. With a legacy of 60 years, our services continue to empower our community in San Francisco and beyond. Our commitment extends beyond treatment. At the heart of Friendship House is a vision to foster community resilience, cultural revitalization, and generational healing. We operate two residential facilities—an 80-bed treatment center for adults in San Francisco and a 9-bed facility for mothers with young children in Oakland. Each provides not just clinical care but a space of cultural reconnection, community support, and holistic healing. Central to our future is Village SF—an ambitious initiative that embodies our belief in cultural reclamation and environmental stewardship. Village SF will offer a Wellness Center with supportive housing, a health clinic, ceremonial spaces, and a rooftop garden, creating a hub where urban Native people can gather, heal, and celebrate their culture. Supported by a coalition of local, state, and federal leaders, Village SF is a testament to the strength and resilience of Native communities in the Bay Area. We invite you to learn more about our work, support our initiatives, and join us in building a future rooted in healing, tradition, and community strength.
